“Can College Counselors Use Duct Tape?” Published in Counseling Today
Minneapolis, MN - National publication Counseling Today recently published an article by Todd Monger, Director of NCU’s Student Success Center and a licensed counselor. “Can College Counselors Use Duct Tape?” (March 2008 issue). Monger was also featured in the winter 2008 issue of AGTS Rapport magazine.
In the Counseling Today article Monger recalled one of his favorite TV shows, MacGyver. He wrote, “The title character’s uncanny ability to take everyday objects and devise a makeshift solution to an often life-threatening situation always intrigued me.”
Monger compares being a counselor to a roadside mechanic in that during a crisis they often have to be creative in their solution. “They don’t have all the parts, the equipment or even the time to completely correct the problem, but they know what it takes to get the car back on the road. Sometimes the duct tape comes out to provide a quick fix...that allows the driver to get off the side of the road and on to somewhere safe. Other times, the damage is too severe and a tow truck is called, but the end result is the same – the stranded motorist is safe.”
Though the implications of assisting students in crisis are far different than those of fixing an automobile, Monger believes it’s a fair metaphor for the unique situation of a college counselor, who must be creative and resourceful in order to best help students navigate a wide variety of situations and experiences. Monger and the Student Success Center team consistently demonstrate this resourcefulness and commitment to helping students - in whatever way they are able.
Monger’s background includes work in a psychiatric hospital emergency room, dual diagnosis treatment centers, and some private practice. He has spent numerous hours training his team and facilitating the vision he has established for the Student Success Center: Seeking to advance the success of all students in all areas.
