Why study English at North Central University?

North Central’s English major will prepare you as an innovative thinker and lifelong learner. We offer three tracks—Literature, Creative Writing, and Professional and Technical Writing—all designed to equip you with a deep understanding of the English language, the craft of writing, and the world around you. As you learn to explore culture and make creative contributions, you’ll gain the analytical, critical thinking, and communication skills you need for success in any career field.

The Creative Writing track will prepare you to become a professional writer. You will Learn:

  • Write original work in one or more creative literary forms—poetry, fiction, non-fiction, script
  • Analyze and interpret one or more creative literary forms—poetry, fiction, non-fiction, script
  • Respond to others’ work and offer constructive feedback
  • Practice the process-oriented approach to writing
  • Revise your work and incorporate useful critical responses
  • Explore and understand classic, contemporary, and/or avant-garde models of one or more creative literary forms—poetry, fiction, non-fiction, script
  • Embrace the constant creative challenge of working through failure

The Literature track will prepare you to be a close reader, critical thinker, cultural interpreter, and advanced scholar of English literature. You’ll learn to:

  • Explore traditional and nontraditional canons of literature and interpret them in their social, cultural, and historical context
  • Analyze literary forms in terms of style, figurative language, and convention
  • Use source material in the interpretation of literary texts
  • Discover and explore directions for new scholarship
  • Apply and explain concepts from literary theory and criticism in the analysis and interpretation of texts
  • Understand literature through a Christian worldview

The Professional and Technical Writing track will prepare you to write in business and organizational settings. You’ll learn to:

  • Read with interpretive and analytical proficiency one or more nonfiction and technical forms
  • Write with proficiency in one or more nonfiction and technical forms
  • Respond to peers’ work in one or more nonfiction and technical forms
  • Practice the process-oriented approach to writing
  • Incorporate useful critical responses to your work in subsequent revisions
  • Demonstrate practical awareness of models of nonfiction and technical forms
  • Embrace the constant creative challenge of working through failure
