MN AG Appoints NCU Alum Phil Johnson ’11 as New District Youth Director

Recently, the Minnesota Assemblies of God appointed Phil Johnson, a North Central University (NCU) alumnus from the class of 2011, as the new District Youth Director (DYD). This appointment marks the beginning of a new chapter for Johnson, who has dedicated his life to serving youth and fostering their spiritual growth.

Background and Early Ministry

Phil Johnson’s journey in ministry began in Minnesota, where he was born into a minister’s home as the oldest of three boys. His early years were spent under the nurturing guidance of his parents, which laid the foundation for his future in ministry. Johnson graduated from NCU with a Bachelor of Science degree in Youth Development and is a licensed Assemblies of God minister.

Reverend Mark Dean, Superintendent of the Minnesota Assemblies of God, provided insights into Johnson’s early ministry roles:

“Pastor Phil was born into a Minnesota minister’s home as the oldest of three boys and graduated from NCU in 2011. He married Audrey nearly 13 years ago and they have two boys, ages 9 and 7. They served in their first ministry role working under the leadership of Pastor Chris Book, then served under Pastor James Biffert at Bethel’s Rock from 2011 to 2013. For the past eleven years, Phil & Audrey have served under Pastor Nate Ruch as the Lead Youth Pastor at Emmanuel Christian Center”.

Leadership at Emmanuel Christian Center

At Emmanuel Christian Center (ECC), Johnson served as the Executive Director of Next Gen Ministries, overseeing youth, kids, and young adult ministries across all campuses. His role was pivotal in shaping the spiritual lives of many young individuals. Johnson’s dedication to his work is evident in his own words:

“After almost 11 wonderful years at Emmanuel and Emmanuel YOUTH, I’ve begun to enter the final turn on my last lap at Emmanuel. Words cannot begin to describe or capture what this last decade+ has meant to Audrey and I being a part of what God is doing here at the Church. Emmanuel has meant so much to us in our journey and faith walk that it’s truly hard to comprehend”.

Johnson’s leadership and passion for youth ministry were transformative for the church community. He expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve under Pastor Nate Ruch and highlighted the profound impact of his experiences at ECC:

“Emmanuel YOUTH, I love you. The stories and testimonies of God’s goodness and faithfulness in your lives over this last decade is EVERYTHING! Thankful for your trust and willingness to continue to chase after all that God has put on your heart and where His Holy Spirit continues to lead you”.

New Role as District Youth Director

As Johnson transitions into his new role as the DYD for the State of Minnesota, he brings with him a wealth of experience and a heartfelt commitment to youth ministry. Superintendent Mark Dean praised Johnson’s capabilities and the positive impact he has had:

“In my time of serving as the MN DYD I had the privilege of personally working alongside Phil & Audrey. They are seasoned, relational leaders who have a deep passion for reaching the Next Generation. Their love for Jesus and those He has called runs deep. The team of Minnesota Youth Pastors and leaders is a very strong team! With God’s help they will just continue to grow stronger”.

Johnson is enthusiastic about his new assignment and the opportunity to work under the leadership of Mark Dean and Kirby St. John:

“As this chapter comes to a close, I will be stepping into my next assignment as the DYD for the State of MN beginning July 5th underneath the leadership of Mark Dean. Will be interning under the leadership of Kirby St. John this summer before fully stepping into the role this fall”.

Looking Ahead

Phil Johnson’s appointment as the District Youth Director is a testament to his dedication and leadership in youth ministry. His journey from NCU to ECC and now to the Minnesota Assemblies of God headquarters is a reflection of his unwavering commitment to serving the next generation. As he steps into this new role, the community eagerly anticipates the positive impact he will continue to make on the lives of young people across the state.

With his wife Audrey, who continues to serve on staff at ECC, and their two sons, Parker and Paxton, Johnson embarks on this new journey with a deep sense of faith and purpose. His life and ministry exemplify his belief in being a follower of Jesus and a fan of people, dedicated to nurturing the spiritual growth of the next generation.
