Minneapolis, MN – North Central University is thrilled to announce that it has been awarded a grant of $1.25 million over the next five years from Lilly Endowment Inc. to establish the Preaching Institute for City Transformation. This grant is part of Lilly Endowment’s Compelling Preaching Initiative, which aims to foster preaching that inspires, encourages, and guides individuals in their Christian faith.
The Preaching Institute for City Transformation will focus on urban preaching, engaging visionary leaders from across the United States to establish the topics and focuses of the institute’s initiatives. Through this effort, North Central University is committed to nurturing pastors and practitioners in city contexts, providing them with the resources and support they need to address the unique challenges they face.
Drawing inspiration from Nehemiah who rebuilt the city walls of Jerusalem by bringing together city and religious leaders, NCU’s Preaching Institute for City Transformation seeks to bridge gaps between communities and organizations for the betterment of cities.
“The story of Nehemiah serves as a powerful example of what can be achieved when leaders come together with a shared vision for renewal and transformation,” said Doug Graham, D.Min., Interim President at North Central University. “Through the Preaching Institute for City Transformation, we aspire to emulate Nehemiah’s spirit of collaboration and determination.”
Adam Sikorski, D.Min., Assistant Professor and Director of Pastoral Studies at NCU states, “We are honored and grateful to Lilly Endowment Inc. for their generous support of our vision to empower urban pastors and practitioners. Through the Preaching Institute for City Transformation, we aim to build a community of like-minded individuals who are dedicated to revitalizing cities and transforming lives.”
The Preaching Institute for City Transformation will offer a range of programming, including cohort teaching, coaching, and an annual conference featuring national speakers and breakout sessions. It will also engage the student body of North Central University, providing them with opportunities to participate in the institute’s activities and contribute to its mission.
“We believe that by investing in the leadership and skills of pastors and practitioners, we can make a meaningful impact on our cities and communities,” said Darnell Williams Sr., D.Min., Associate Professor of Pastoral Leadership at NCU, and Director of the Preaching Institute for City Transformation. “Our goal is to create lasting change that extends beyond the duration of the grant, leaving a legacy of transformation and renewal.”
North Central University is one of 142 organizations nationwide to receive grants through Lilly Endowment’s Compelling Preaching Initiative. These organizations represent a diverse range of Christian traditions and are united in their commitment to preaching that inspires and uplifts.
