Self-care during quarantine

Self-care during quarantine

Let’s be honest-even when there isn’t a global pandemic going on, it can be hard to make space for some self-care. The idea of “self-care” became really popular among millennials and is defined as “the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one’s own health” or “the practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress”.

It is probably safe to say that this is a period of stress for most people. Not only do you have to think about your health constantly, but financial burdens, adjusting to new routines, and grieving what you thought this time of your life would look like, are all huge stressors. So if there ever was a time to give yourself some grace and lean into some good self-care practices, now would be the time.

We have compiled a list of ideas for self-care during a global pandemic:

FaceTime a friend

Whether you’re an introvert or extrovert, finding a time to connect with a good friend can be a fun way to practice self-care!  People were made for community so scheduling a call with a friend and taking time to chat can be helpful in feeling connected to the world in the midst of quarantine. It can even help the day feel more fluid when you have something to look forward to after you get done with your class work!

Don’t beat yourself up

Everyday looks different during a pandemic. It is easy to carry a lot of stress during a crazy time like this without even recognizing it. So if some days it is hard for you to get out of bed or change out of your pajamas, just remember this it is ok! You’re doing the best that you can! It’s a strange time for everyone.

Find a screen-less hobby

With not much else to do except homework, binge-watch a Netflix show, or scroll endlessly on Instagram, it can be hard to get away from the screen. Finding a screen-less hobby like painting, reading (a real book), or riding a bike can be a good way to break up your day and make you feel more human!

Get out of bed

When all classes and meetings are now online, it can be easy to just chill in bed all day and not even realize the day is passing! A helpful way to feel productive and energized is waking up to an alarm at the same time everyday and getting out of bed! Bonus points if you create a morning routine.

Stay hydrated

When there is less structure during the day it can be hard to remember to drink water and stay hydrated. Staying hydrated will not only help you feel healthy and productive, but it can actually help prevent sickness as well! When your body is getting enough water in the day, it will be more likely to fight off sickness and maintain a healthy balance!

Practice Gratitude

A global pandemic is a really good way to leave you missing the things you once took for granted. It can be easy to focus on the things that are now missing in our lives like going to coffee shops or hanging out with friends. Practicing gratitude can be a really simple way to reenergize yourself during a time like this and focus on the good parts of your life.

Obviously self-care looks very different for everyone and can even look different day-to-day. The most important part of self-care is checking in with yourself to see how you are doing and what you need that day. If you know you need some exercise, a FaceTime call with a good friend, or to schedule some extra sleep time, just remember to listen to what your body needs and practice self-care!
